Our Way
So, you've considered Karate for your martial arts pursuit, but you're still wondering-
"What's the difference between all these Karate clubs/ schools? Which is the right one for me?" If all you're after is to try something new and get onboard a new lifestyle that exercises your body, mind, and spirit, it doesn't really matter!
Pick any Karate club that's convenient for you to attend regularly, with an instructor whom you feel at ease speaking to, and a positive class culture where your safety and well-being comes first. Being one of the most popular martial arts in the world (including Singapore) has its merits- there's bound to be a Karate class near you. |
Visit a class and possibly, try one out and see how you like being there.
Yet, if your search for the ideal Karate class is fuelled by specific goals, search on!
Are you looking for a class that is more kata (forms) intensive? Or one that emphasizes practical self-defence? Maybe something that focuses on tournament excellence?
Different Karate clubs (and organizations) tend to focus on different things, so take your time to interact with them and see if they offer what you're looking for.

How do we do Karate at Lionheart Academy (LHA)?
Having practiced and shared the joy of Karate for decades ourselves, we eventually came to wonder,
Having practiced and shared the joy of Karate for decades ourselves, we eventually came to wonder,
Thereon, we decided to reimagine a Karate experience that is authentic to its roots and practical to the realities of daily life.
At LHA, our programs are driven by two guiding elements- Form and Function. To us, Karate isn't about just obsessing how a set movement looks nor is it about having an "anything goes" attitude. We believe in the inherent practical application of Karate and strive to uncover its practical applications instead of simply practicing it in a manner of "it's always been that way". To us, presenting Karate as an effective Okinawan-Japanese martial art form, must come hand-in-hand with applying it realistically to our daily lives, whether as a practical form of self-defense, an effective means of personal development, or a fulfilling endeavor that can be explored for a lifetime. |

In this pursuit, we specialize in small-group tutorships, reliving how Karate instruction was done historically in its founding days.
This way, individual learning needs are better taken care of and attention to detail can be better emphasized.

Our method of instruction emphasizes partnered practice, free-play, and the use of supplementary training tools to encourage quicker grasp of concepts as compared to traditional rote learning and line drills.
We are passionate advocates of principles-based training to develop skills that can be quickly adapted to the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of real-life situations.
Most of all, enjoying Karate at LHA means being in a safe and nurturing environment, guided by the philosophy of "challenge by choice"-
Recognizing that each participant comes with unique goals and inspiring them to pursue them and evolve without imposing onto them unrealistic expectations.

What is Karate and Why do Karate at all?
Literally translating to "empty hands" (空手), this martial art of Okinawan/ Japanese origins bears many forms across various schools and lineages (think Kung Fu).
Spirited, explosive, and dynamic movements involving kicks, punches, and other methods of unarmed combat are common perceptions of a Karate display.
It is a practice that is enjoyed by thousands of practitioners across the world from different walks of life- young, old, physically abled, or not...
Essentially, Karate is a path to realizing your personal potential through exploring the abilities of your body, mind, and spirit, as if guided by the question: "With these Empty Hands, what am I capable of?"
Karate sets a strong foundation for your journey in the martial arts.
Physically, you learn to use your whole body to move, strike, and grapple, while expanding your stamina, strength, endurance, and flexibility.
Practice is often physically and mentally demanding, ultimately inculcating values such as respect, determination, and camaraderie.
Classes are often well-structured based on set routines, making it easy for anyone to follow.
For the beginner, it eliminates the anxiety of feeling lost in class, and for the experienced practitioner, it provides ample opportunities for getting better at the basics.
Amidst the physical training, etiquette is emphasized in a Karate class, contributing to positive character development, a safe and nurturing learning environment, and appreciation of Okinawan-Japanese martial arts culture.
